What need for NYS Graduated Driver License Applicants Under Age 18 (Class DJ or MJ)
If you are under age 18, you must have six months of valid permit status from the date your permit is issued to the date of your road test. This is not required if:
You are age 17, you have completed driver education, and you have a form MV-285 driver education certificate, or
You take your road test before February 22, 2010 and receive a limited junior license.
You must also have the required number of hours of supervised driving practice.
If you are under age 18:
You must have at least 50 hours of supervised practice driving before your road test with at least 15 hours at night (after sunset).
If you take your road test before February 22, 2010, you need only 20 hours of supervised practice driving.
You must bring to the road test Form MV-262 (Certification of Supervised Driving) completed by your parent, guardian, driver education instructor or driving school instructor to certify that you have had the required hours of supervised practice driving.
The hours of supervised practice driving and form MV-262 are not required if you are age 17 and have a form MV-285 driver education certificate. If you do not require form MV-262, the DMV recommends that you practice at least 30 hours for your road test with least 10 hours in medium to high volume traffic.
